Dehumidifiers for Archives & Libraries

Paper, books and records need a narrow, stable humidity band — too damp and mould and insects move in, too dry and paper turns brittle.

Target band40–50% RH

Archives, libraries and record rooms hold material that can't be replaced. Paper, bindings, photographs and files are all damaged by high humidity: mould and brown "foxing" spots appear on pages, insects become more active, and pages stick together. In Pakistan's humid season, record rooms in government offices, universities, courts, banks and company head offices are especially at risk.

What goes wrong when humidity is too high

  • Mould and brown foxing spots on paper and book pages
  • Insect activity increasing in damp conditions
  • Pages sticking together and photographs being damaged
  • Paper becoming brittle and cracking if too dry
  • Binding glue and leather covers breaking down

Dehumidifiers we’d suggest for archives & libraries

A starting point, not a sizing promise — the right model depends on your space. Try the size calculator or send us the details and we’ll recommend one.

Why 40–50% RH is the target

Preservation guidance for most paper-based collections points to a moderate, stable band — around 40–50% RH is a sensible target in Pakistan's climate. Below that range paper can become brittle; above it, mould and insect activity accelerate. Stability matters as much as the number: large daily swings stress paper and bindings even if the average looks fine.

Choosing the right dehumidifier for an archive

What to consider:

  • The size of the room and how well sealed it is
  • How densely it's shelved — tightly packed stacks need good air movement
  • Whether the room has air conditioning, and whether it runs around the clock
  • Whether it's in a basement or against an outside wall

Small record rooms often suit a portable or commercial unit, while large stack rooms and archive stores may need industrial capacity. Continuous operation is key, so a unit that runs steadily on a direct drain holds the band better than one that stops when a bucket fills. Send us the details and we'll recommend a setup.

Placement and drainage

Place the unit where air moves freely along the shelving, never directly blowing onto shelves. Keep water well away from collections — use a direct drain to a safe outlet.

Dehumidifiers for archives & libraries: common questions

Does the unit need to run continuously?

For archives, yes. Continuous operation on a direct drain avoids the humidity swings that happen when a unit cycles off or a bucket fills. Stability protects paper as much as the number itself.

Can a dehumidifier make the room too dry?

Set the target humidity and the unit stops when it's reached, so it won't keep drying. For archives, setting around 40–50% keeps paper from becoming brittle.

We already have AC in the record room. Is that enough?

AC helps, but if it's switched off at night or at weekends, humidity rises and falls with it. A dehumidifier holds a steady band around the clock.

How do I know which size to buy?

The right capacity depends on the space, how damp it is, how it's used and your local climate — not floor area alone. Use the free size calculator for a starting point, or send us the details on WhatsApp and our team will recommend a model within one working day.
