Most sizing guides start and end with floor area — square metres in, litres-per-day out. That gets you in the right neighbourhood, but it skips two things that matter as much as area: ceiling height and how damp the space actually feels, both of which change the answer by a meaningful margin.
Start with volume, not area. A 20 m² room with a 3 m ceiling holds 25% more air than the same room with a 2.4 m ceiling — and it's the air's moisture content you're removing, not the floor's. Multiply area by height to get volume in cubic metres before you do anything else.
Adjust for how the space actually feels. A room that's visibly damp — condensation on windows, a musty smell, damp patches — needs meaningfully more capacity than a dry room of identical volume, because the starting moisture load is higher. Our Find My Size tool asks for this specifically rather than assuming a single average condition.
Adjust for climate. Coastal cities carry a higher ambient humidity baseline than inland ones — a room in Karachi and an identical room in Islamabad don't need the same capacity, even with the same volume and dampness rating. See our city guides for Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad for what that means locally.
Adjust for usage pattern. A bedroom used a few hours a night has a different real-world load than a warehouse running continuously, or a pool room evaporating moisture non-stop. Continuous, high-load spaces need to be sized for sustained operation, not an average.
When a rule of thumb isn't enough. For anything beyond a single room — a whole floor, a warehouse, an industrial hall — volume-based estimates are a starting point, not a final answer. We recommend a data-logged site survey for larger or higher-value spaces before quoting, so the number you get is based on measured conditions, not an assumption.
The fastest way to get a real number for your space is our Find My Size tool — it runs this same method and gives you a specific model recommendation in under a minute.
For a very rough first estimate on a standard-height room, yes — but ceiling height, dampness and climate all move the real number, sometimes by 20–30%. Use Find My Size for anything you're actually about to buy.
Open-plan floors, warehouses and multi-room sites are usually better served by a data-logged site survey than a single volume calculation — send us the layout and we'll confirm whether that's needed.
